Talk To Her - Review

1)     Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
In class we discussed the mood of the of film. I said it was a twisted psychological thriller. We discussed the way it was shot and how creative it was got when showing two stories intertwine within another. We also spoke about Benigno’s (Javier Camara) state of mind in this film. I was assuming he was a psychopath. We discussed how he was in love with Alicia (Leonor Watling) and how he took care of her when she fell ill.  Benigno was definitely mentally troubled. The double edge sword here is that in harming her, he woke her up from a coma.

2)    Find a related article and summarize the content.

I chose this article on content because it was the most interesting to me. It is from a nursing perspective but also touches base on the film as a whole. They focus on the men in the film and how they interact with their lover (women) before they are comatose and once they are in a coma. The two story’s intertwine and Benigno befriends Marco (Dario Grandinetti) once they meet in the facility. This article points out how they show mostly the nurses caring for patients, whereas most films tend to show the Primary Doctor. They show how they bath them, care for them, talk to them. They also showed how spiritually connected or in love (obsessed) Benigno is with his patient and love object (Alicia). He does things that she was passionate about, he talks to her as if she is awake. The article stops suddenly when they start to talk about the treatment given by Benigno being ambiguous and mixed.

3)    Apply the article to the film screened in class.

The reason I chose this article is because it did in fact make me look at the film from another perspective rather than just honing in on the main character and his psychosis. It opened my mind to think outside the box and understand that he did in fact commit a crime by rapping Alicia while she was in a coma but, also he did wake her out of it. She never ended up giving birth to a live baby and I am sure she was scard for life. On the other side of reality, she got her life back. It seeming very traumatic to experience, she also could not have felt it. And towards the end of the film, you see her back at the dance studio. She goes back to her passion and starts training. That shows strength and depth of character. You also see that Benigno is in jail for the crime he committed and once he finds out that he cannot get out, he kills himself before finding out that she is alive. It is a major tragedy but also another double edged sword because, if he in fact did get out of jail, one must wonder if he would have stalked her down and caused harm. They played him out to be sweet and innocent but that could also take a turn. This shows crimes of love and obsession. The way this film was written, filmed and edited is extremely brilliant.

4)    Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.

“Talk to her” is a film with an array of themes; we talked about it being like a soap opera to an all out tragedy. One of the themes is that men can carry characteristics of women. Both of the main male characters were very feminine. We see a man living his emotional life through a woman and men caring for and devoting their lives to a patient in a coma. Benigno and Marco are both waiting by a bedside for the woman they love to wake, although you see the Doctor telling them that the chances are slim to none.  In this very selfless act, Director Pedro Almodovar film’s usually show a familiarity with strange angels of human sexual expression. He shows us something creepy about their devotion in this film. He also throws in a man ray type film in black and white that Benigno goes to see that shows a man crawling into a woman’s vagina. Hence this is a bit disturbing and comedic of a black film. But, the next scene he is with Alicia alone and bathing her coma state body, telling her about the film. Then the unthinkable occurs. She is pregnant. I was not expecting this and although that act of crime and insanity occurred, she ended up waking from a coma. I do think the story is intricate and the way the story was written and filmed and formed is amazing. Very real and emotional as well as disturbing and moving, as all good art.

Three Colors Blue

  •  1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
In class we discussed, the usage of colors in this film as well as Director Krzysztof Kieslowski style of filming. His usage of blues and colors added to the dramatic story of her life. The scenes where she was in the pool show blues and how she is in deep meditation. The way the film was edited shows many different angels from her point of view and adds emotion to the film so that you can feel apart of her life.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       2) Find a related article and summarize the content.

    http://www.nytimes.com/1993/12/04/movies/review-film-blue-the-first-installment-of-a-tricolor-trilogy.html

This article can be summarized in short that the film is about a woman who is grieving the loss of her husband and child. It also points out how she is a brick and takes all of the pain fairly well. Even when she finds out that her husband was not faithful she still forgives and moves on. It talks about how she was in part composing with her famous husband who passed away in a car accident. For her to seem so devastated in this movie was shocking being that he was reliant on her to create music which, no one knew. The film was very deep and emotional.

    3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.

The article helped me summarize the films meaning. In a sense it gives meaning the film from beginning, climax and to the ending of the story. The liberty, equality and fraternity was something I did not pick up when watching the film but after reading the article, it made sense. It is a very mysterious film and it took me reading this article to see further into the depths of it.

    4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.

The start of the film was very dramatic when seeing the car accident. I liked the way it was filmed and the cuts from long shot, to establishing shots to then extreme close ups. This drew me into the film and the main actress Juliette Binoche. I got a feel of how she must be feeling after loosing her family, the fact that she had no one and went on with no care in the world except missing them shocked me. She still never really broke down yet, went on to find her place in the world and took it as it came to her. We did not find out until later in the film how much of an important role she played to her famous composer husband. She still went on and lived her life humble. For me, she played a powerful character and that spoke to me. She even went to visit her mother but never stayed. She moved around, left and did what she wanted. Her mission was set out before her and she embarked on whatever path needed to be taken for her own fulfillment.

Screening Report 1: UK: Trainspotting

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
In class we discussed everyones thoughts about the film after screening. We spoke about why the movie might have been titled "Trainspotting" and by looking up an article, I found that there are trainspotters in the UK, who stand around and look to spot a particular class of locomotive. Their hobby is just as relevant to them as someone who is a drug addict, in which Trainspotting is about drug addicts. I found that interesting because, who would ever think of that or tie the two concepts together. We also talked about the ways in which the film was filmed and I realized how Director Danny Boyle likes to use kinetic filming strategies. I am impressed with his technique of filming and the development of each character as well. In class who spoke about how Boyle also took ideas from Stanley Kubrick's film Clockwork Orange and used it in this film. There was a scene with everyone at a milk bar in Kubrick's film that was reenacted in trainspotting.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.  (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet.  Cite the article and copy the link to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
This article talks about how the film Trainspotting is based on drug addicts point of view. It gives you an in depth look as to how they feel about life, society and what they really are living for. For most of the human species, we are terrified of the thought of trying heroine. For the fear of being instantly addicted and or for it feeling amazing and taking over our lives. How could a drug be that evil and even exist on this earth? The fact that this film got so deep and intricate on this subject made it stand out. No one had ever made a film like this before and the article talks about how the only other film was pulp fiction. However, pulp fiction brought gangsters and con artists.  (Tom Trinchera)
Trainspotting was based on a novel and made into a film. The characters are very interesting and have their own personality which, gives the story layers and makes it more interesting. This film started a cult following in the UK and US. The story shows how negative being a drug addict could be and get, it also shows the struggle of getting clean and how your crowd of friends influences you. There was parts that show how the main character Renton wanting to get sober and change his life around.
At the very end when he starts talking and it starts with choose life...he goes on to list things that we all strive for and have. It gives me the chills every time, it is an emotional film and gives you an in depth feel as to what is it like to in fact be a drug addict.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
This article enlightened me in on the movie because, I never would have looked at it from those perspectives. I did not know it started a cult in UK and USA. I am impressed with the power this film and it's creativity had on others. I also did not know that it was based off of a novel and knowing that, I now want to purchase the novel. This article gave me a wider perception of what this film is about and gives me a richer sense of what the director was going for when creating this film. The simple fact that it is about heroine and then became such a success not only in the UK but in the USA is remarkable. Also, the sound track is amazing and never gets old.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this)  than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.
Trainspotting is a film about heroine addiction. The setting takes place in Scottland and follows a group of drug addicted friends. They are street punks and almost always committing crimes to get what they fein for. The characters are amusing, bright, and overbearingly unique enough to pull you in and leave a lasting memory.

Although, this film is about darkened topic, it somehow stays on the light and up side. One may find themselves surprised at the level of entertainment felt by a film about drugs and addiction. The worst part of the film is when the baby dies of a heroine overdose. Director Boyle creative use of wide angles, bright colors, attractively clean compositions make this entertaining. There is not even one solid story line, it sort of just flows in a colorful way. This film is a must see1

"Trainspotting" is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It includes profanity, sexual situations, frontal nudity, graphic drug use, excrement and abrupt, startling violence.

Directed by Danny Boyle; written by John Hodge, based on a novel by Irvine Welsh; director of photography, Brian Tufano; edited by Masahiro Hirakubo; production designer, Kave Quinn; produced by Andrew Macdonald; released by Miramax Films. Running time: 94 minutes. This film is rated R.
